Market Trends of Sweden Cold Chain Logistics Industry

Pharmaceutical Industry Demands Advanced Cold-Chain Services

The Swedish economy now heavily depends on the life sciences sector. Swedish pharmaceutical exports totaled almost 70 billion SEK in the first half of 2022 alone, rising nearly 40% from the same period the previous year. One of the few sectors for which stakeholders anticipate ongoing growth is the pharmaceutical business, despite an economic environment that is becoming more ambiguous.

The first half of the year saw around 70 billion SEK in Swedish pharmaceutical exports. When imports reached 31.5 billion SEK, the pharmaceutical sector contributed 38.5 billion SEK to Sweden's overall net trade, but there was still a 3 billion SEK deficit.

Drugs need special care since they are sensitive to temperature changes, such as temperature-controlled transit, which is often handled by logistics service providers. The marketing authorization given to the drug contains details about these conditions. Most medications are kept between 59 °F and 77 °F in a regulated setting. Biotechnologies and vaccines frequently need to be kept in the positive cold between 35,6 °F to 46,4 °F for storage. Certain vaccines, like messenger RNA vaccines, which must be stored at -4 or even -94 °F, even require a negative cold.

E-Commerce Driving the Cold Chain Logistics

Sweden is one of the most technologically advanced countries, and its consumers have a high level of e-commerce maturity. Sweden's consumers are among the most technologically savvy and affluent consumers in the world, and they are also the top users of eCommerce in Europe. In March 2023, blocket.se was the most popular eCommerce & shopping website in Sweden, followed by amazon.se in second place and tradera.com in third. These three websites are considered the leaders of the Swedish eCommerce & shopping websites. The fourth-ranked prisjakt.nu and last-place pricerunner.se round up the top 5 eCommerce & Shopping websites ranking list in Sweden for March 2023.

Sweden has the largest e-commerce market in the Nordic region. The percentage of retail purchases made online had been rising rapidly between 2007 and 2021 when the COVID-19 epidemic first appeared. With the emergency over, people started going back to the high street, which decreased the demand for online shopping. As a result, in 2022, e-commerce experienced a record-breaking decline. Recent projections indicate that Swedish e-commerce sales will reach approximately 136 billion Swedish kronor in 2022, or more than 12 billion euros. Compared to 2021, the amount decreased by 10 billion Swedish kronor or about 899,000 euros. The e-commerce business is still booming despite the post-pandemic slump; it's probably just returning to its natural growth trajectory.
