Market Trends of South America Rice Industry

Increasing Rice Productivity is Boosting the Market

  • Rice production in South America is concentrated in the region's tropical countries, with Brazil leading as the largest producer, followed by Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador. Despite its production capacity, Latin America remains a net rice importer, similar to Africa. Rice consumption in the region has increased by approximately 40% over the past two decades, making it the fastest-growing staple food. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical (FAOSTAT) database, South America's rice production reached 23.9 million metric tons in 2022. Brazil contributed 45% of this total, while Peru and Colombia accounted for 14% and 10%, respectively.
  • Technological innovations such as precision farming, improved irrigation techniques, and genetically modified rice varieties are helping farmers increase yields and manage production risks. These advancements are boosting rice output and helping South America become a more competitive player in the market. For instance, as per Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) data, the yield of rice in Colombia increased from 4,482.7 kg/ha in 2021 to 4,526 kg/ha in 2022, Ecuador increased from 3,546.9 in 2021 to 3,708.7 in 2022, and Guayana increased from 5,519.9 kg/ha in 2021 to 6,028.5 kg/ha in 2022.

Brazil Dominates the Market

  • Brazil, the world's fifth-largest country by area and population, possesses the largest expanse of arable land globally. This positions Brazil as one of the few nations with significant potential to increase agricultural productivity. Brazil is a major rice producer in South America. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports Brazil's rice production at 10.7 million metric tons, accounting for approximately half of the region's total production. Despite this substantial output, Brazil also imports rice to meet domestic demand. ITC Trade Map data indicates that Brazil imported 1 million metric tons of rice in 2023, an 18% increase from the previous year.
  • The demand for Brazilian rice is growing rapidly from neighboring countries. According to the International Trade Center (ITC) Trade Map, Brazil ranks as the 10th largest rice exporter worldwide, underscoring its regional dominance in rice production and trade. The country exported 1.4 million metric tons of rice in 2023, a 70% increase from 0.8 million metric tons in 2021. The main importers of Brazilian rice include Mexico, Senegal, Venezuela, and Costa Rica, accounting for 61% of Brazil's rice export volume. New cultivators, coupled with advanced farm management techniques, have enhanced productivity and bolstered exports.
