Market Trends of Portugal Container Glass Industry
Beverage Segment is Expected to Witness Significant Growth
- Portugal's food and beverage industry is becoming increasingly competitive, attracting more foreign investments and boosting its global exports. AICEP Portugal reports that the country's food and beverage sector is experiencing this competitive surge.
- Data from Portugal News highlights that in 2024, Portugal led Europe in daily alcohol consumption, a trend that significantly drives up the demand for container glass. In response, Portuguese manufacturers are customizing their container glass products, focusing on spirit and liquor bottles in diverse colors and sizes.
- Portugal's beverage exports, especially in spirits and wine, stand out. ViniPortugal noted that in 2023, the nation exported wine valued at 928 million euros, amounting to 319 million liters. Moreover, the first half of 2024 witnessed a significant rise in wine exports, with value increasing by 1.25% and volume by 8.58% from the prior year, further boosting the demand for container glass.
- Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho, a government agency in Portugal, pinpointed Douro, Lisboa, and Alentejo as the country's top wine-producing regions in 2023. Collectively, they produced nearly 2.8 million hectoliters of wine, highlighting the growing need for glass containers in Portugal.
Pharmaceutical Segment is Expected to Support Growth
- Glass containers play a pivotal role as primary packaging materials in the pharmaceutical industry. These containers, made from either borosilicate (neutral) glass or soda-lime-silica glass, are favored for their excellent resistance to thermal shocks and hydrolytic challenges, making them indispensable in pharmaceuticals.
- As Portugal ramps up its pharmaceutical manufacturing investments, the demand for container glass surges. In May 2024, Havoine, a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), teamed up with iBET (Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica), a private, not-for-profit research-intensive SME, to unveil ViSync Technologies. This new joint venture, situated in Oeiras near Lisbon, aims to pioneer innovative technologies and scalable solutions tailored for pharmaceutical firms.
- Glass's remarkable temperature resistance is a boon for the pharmaceutical sector. In Portugal, manufacturers of pharmaceutical container glass are dedicated to producing glass bottles and jars that not only endure high temperatures but also remain chemically non-reactive, fueling the rising demand.
- Portugal's pharmaceutical sales, bolstered by an aging population, reached USD 3.47 Billion in 2022, with projections of climbing to USD 3.55 Billion in 2023, as per the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The landscape is predominantly shaped by multinationals, many of whom rely on imports for their finished products.
