Irrigation Pumps Market Analysis
The Irrigation Pumps Market size is estimated at USD 151.43 billion in 2025, and is expected to reach USD 217.40 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 7.5% during the forecast period (2025-2030).
- According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), global irrigated land covered 341 million hectares in 2022, an increase from 337 million hectares in 2021. This growing trend has led to heightened demand for advanced irrigation technologies like pumps. A pump is the most important part of an irrigation system. To make an irrigation system as efficient as possible, the pump must be selected to match the requirements of the water source, the water distribution system, and the irrigation equipment.
- Pumps used in agriculture vary in size depending on the depth of the land from which water must be drawn or the distance from water sources such as reservoirs, rivers, lakes, and dams. Due to its widespread use in irrigation activities on small and medium-sized landholdings, the most common type of agricultural pump is in the 4hp -15hp range. Because the majority of accessible land in the agricultural industry is fragmented, using pumps in this range is both convenient and cost-effective. The market for energy grid connections is higher in places such as Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America, because it is offered at a subsidized rate to farmers.
- In addition, many developing markets are looking forward to Solar pumps, a potential game-changing technology for the agricultural sector, hitting the mainstream. As a viable, more environmentally focused alternative to traditional diesel and petrol-fuelled water pumps and irrigation technologies, cheaper cost of production, provide improved water access for rural communities and boost small farmer incomes across emerging markets, the interest in the technology is growing from both governments and private stakeholders. For instance, in 2022, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar launched a solar power system that comprises solar panels and an inverter to power a surface-mounted pump. The system can be easily moved between farms to pump water for irrigation.
- Solar pumping can align with these evolving policy developments but essentially has only been competitive in regions that have high solar insolation the total amount of heat energy received from the sun during the day such as Africa, South America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Increasing concern about food sustainability, given the continuous population hike across the globe, is likely to keep the demand for integral parts of an irrigation system high in the forecast period.
Irrigation Pumps Market Trends
Adoption of Irrigation Systems in Developing Countries
Agriculture remains a cornerstone of economic development in developing nations across the globe. For instance, the Government of India has implemented policies to enhance agricultural production while focusing on sustainable development. Since 2021, the government has promoted solar irrigation pumps (SIPs) through investment subsidies. These pumps offer multiple benefits, including reduced carbon emissions, reliable energy supply, zero fuel costs, and minimal operational expenses by reducing dependence on fossil fuel-based electricity. As of 2024 December, 352,138 pumps have been installed according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
According to FAO, the developing countries as a whole are expected to expand their irrigated area by 2030. Most of this expansion will occur in land-scarce areas of southern and eastern Asia, where irrigation is already crucial. The study covered 93 developing countries across the globe, countries such as China and India are benefited from various subsidies given by the government to increase the area under irrigation. It is estimated that a total irrigation potential of some 402 million hectares in developing countries, of which half is currently in use. Cropping intensities and yields are systematically higher in irrigated than in rain-fed areas. Thus, the demand for an efficient irrigation system is gaining momentum by the day and is likely to drive the Irrigation pumps market in the forecast period.
Asia-Pacific Dominates the Market
The Asia-Pacific region, particularly China and India, significantly contributes to the growth of the irrigation pump market. The market expansion is supported by the availability of fertile land and improvements in farming processes. In China, farmers are increasingly cultivating high-value cash crops despite water scarcity, as these crops are better suited for water-saving irrigation practices and offer higher productivity. This has led to a shift toward cost-effective and risk-reducing irrigation methods, including solar panel-powered pump irrigation, which provides reliable and affordable energy while reducing irrigation costs.
Solar-powered irrigation has gained global adoption, particularly in developing countries like India and China, as an alternative to fossil fuel and electricity-based irrigation practices that generate greenhouse gases and increase water access costs. In 2023, the Chinese government significantly increased its investment in water conservancy projects, aiming to enhance irrigation infrastructure and ensure water security. The total investment reached a record high of nearly 1.2 trillion yuan (USD169 billion), marking a 10.1% increase from the previous year. The combination of government initiatives and growing agricultural dependence is expected to drive regional market growth during the forecast period.
