Market Trends of India Satellite Communication Industry

Growth of Internet of Things (IoT) and Autonomous Systems

  • Satellites are being used to connect IoT devices in rural and urban areas of India, where terrestrial networks are unavailable. With the rising number of businesses demanding high-speed internet access, satellite broadband is becoming a more attractive option, especially in rural areas.
  • Autonomous systems such as drones and robots are increasingly being used to monitor and control assets in remote locations. It requires high speed and reliable communications offered by satellites.
  • In November 2022, the private sector satellites announced the launch of onboard Indian Space Research Organisation's PSLV C-54 mission. Besides the Earth Observation-06 satellite of ISRO, the PSLV C-54 mission also placed in orbit six other satellites, including Thybolt 1 and 2, created by Hyderabad-based DhruvaSpace. The two Thybolt satellites developed by DhruvaSpace will demonstrate the ability to conduct amateur satellite communication, which may help radio operations.
  • Manufacturers in the country are contributing to the development of advanced satellites integrated with IoT technology. For instance, in June 2023, Ananth Technologies, an Indian aerospace manufacturer, reported its milestone contribution to the SSLV-D2 launch by ISRO. JANUS-1 is a software-defined 6U technology with its master systems integrator (MSI) developed by the company. JANUS-1 carries five different payloads, including IoT and communication systems.
