  • March 2024: Researchers at Panjab University's Institute of Forensic Science were granted an Indian patent for their biodegradable food packaging film. This innovative film, designed to replace conventional plastic packaging, is made from renewable, environmentally friendly materials. This patent encompasses the creation of a biodegradable food packaging film crafted from renewable, environmentally friendly materials designed for the storage and preservation of food items.
  • November 2023: SIG launched its Packaging Development Center in Europe, located at its packaging plants in Linnich, Germany, with an investment of USD 10.93 million. This initiative aims to accelerate the development of innovative and sustainable packaging solutions, providing added value to its customers. The new center is equipped with state-of-the-art extrusion and finishing technologies, along with advanced quality measurement systems and testing equipment. It will significantly enhance packaging processability in serial production, system validation, and capacity for future digital technologies. As per company officials, alongside its existing co-creation and test-filling facilities for food and beverage products, the company can now produce carton sleeves, fill products in compliance with food hygiene regulations, and pack them on pallets. This end-to-end capability effectively transforms the company into a mini factory for packaging and the production of food and beverages.

  • June 2024 - SCHOTT Hungary Kft. inaugurated production for pharmaceutical packaging products in Lukácsháza, Hungary. The facility will manufacture prefillable sterile glass syringes, doubling SCHOTT Pharma's production capacity for these products.
  • March 2024 - Schott Pharma announced plans to build a new production site for syringes in Wilson, North Carolina, USA. The facility will produce prefillable polymer syringes for mRNA drugs and prefillable glass syringes for treatments such as diabetes or obesity."

  • May 2024 - PT. SCHÜTZ Container Systems Indonesia inaugurated a new extrusion blow molding line at its Karawang facility. According to the temperature assurance packaging company, Pegasus ULD performs up to 300+ hours, equivalent to 13 days without human intervention, providing temperature control for 2 to 8°C payloads.
  • February 2023: Gerresheimer AG entered an agreement with Corning Incorporated, a glass manufacturer with tubing and vials. The deal aims to improve access to Corning’s branded vial tech platform, Velocity Vials. The collaboration will reportedly enable Gerresheimer to convert Corning’s platform above into glass form, enhancing product quality, lowering manufacturing costs, and speeding the delivery of injectable therapies. With production in Gerresheimer’s existing facilities, vials are expected to be immediately available in North America, Europe, and Asia.
  • May 2024: SLMG Beverages, Coca-Cola India’s independent bottler, collaborated with Dalmia Packaging to establish a PET bottle recycling plant in India. For this recycling plant, which will have an annual capacity of 36,000 MT and produce 24,000 MT of plastic for PET bottles, the two companies plan to invest INR 0.9 to 1 billion (USD 10.7 million to USD 11.99 million).

  • July 2024: The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) greenlit a significant number of projects, including 41 mega food parks, 399 cold chain initiatives, 76 agro-processing clusters, and 588 food processing units under the PMKSY. MoFPI's initiatives, such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI), and the PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme, aim to propel the food processing industry forward. The PMFME scheme, with a budget of USD 1.19 billion, provided support to 92,549 micro-food processing enterprises. On the other hand, the PLISFPI scheme, backed by a total budget of USD 1.30 billion, is geared toward fostering global food manufacturing champions and bolstering the presence of Indian food brands on the international stage.
  • July 2024: The Consumer Affairs Ministry proposed an update to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. The amendment targets pre-packaged commodities exceeding 25 kg or 25 liters, mandating the disclosure of crucial information when sold in retail markets. If passed, this amendment would necessitate manufacturers, packers, and importers to provide detailed labeling on all pre-packaged goods meant for retail, irrespective of their quantity. This move is anticipated to enhance transparency within the industry, empowering consumers to make more informed purchasing decisions.
  • September 2024: Berlin Packaging, a United States-based company, acquired Nissho Jitsugyo Co., Ltd. This Japanese company supplies packaging products and services to a variety of markets across the country.   • June 2024: Takemoto Yohki Co. Ltd., a Japan-based company, expanded its lineup of hot fill-compatible PET bottles.   • January 2024: WestRock Company has unveiled plans to establish a new corrugated box plant in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, catering to the surging demand from clients in the Great Lakes region.   • July 2024: Sanofi Healthcare India Pvt. Ltd (SHIPL) unveiled plans to bolster its Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Hyderabad, with a substantial investment of EUR 400 million (USD 432 million) earmarked over the next six years. By 2026, the GCC is set to accommodate around 2,600 employees, solidifying its position as the largest among Sanofi's quartet of global hubs. These hubs, often called the company's nerve centres, facilitate centralization, modernization, and the scalability of services across Sanofi's value chain. They offer a comprehensive suite of services, from commercial and manufacturing to research and development and digital solutions.
  • June 2024: Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd unveiled Rabeprazole + Levosulpiride SR Capsules. The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) greenlit these capsules, which are designed to provide heightened relief for patients with gastrointestinal tract (GIT) disorders. Rabeprazole sodium, a potent antisecretory compound, selectively inhibits gastric acid secretion by targeting the H+ and K+ ATPase on the surface of gastric parietal cells.
  • September 2024: In a strategic move two years ago, Toyobo, a prominent Japanese textile and fiber manufacturer, announced its intent to set up a polyester packaging film factory in Indonesia. This factory, a collaborative effort between Toyobo and Indonesian filmmaker PT Trias Sentosa (Trias), will be situated at Pt Trias Toyobo Astria (TTA). The initiative was driven by the increased demand for eco-friendly film products. Toyobo invested around JPY 10 billion (USD 71 million) in the venture, with operations set to kick off in 2024. The investment is anticipated to enhance TTA's production capacity, aiming for full operational status by late 2025.
  • May 2023: Lamipak, a leading packaging solutions provider, revealed its plans to invest USD 200 million in a new factory in Indonesia. Situated close to Cikande in the Serang district, this facility is expected to be Indonesia's inaugural aseptic packaging factory. Targeting an annual output of 18 billion packs, the plant's production is set to unfold in two distinct phases. The first phase began operations in the fourth quarter of 2023.
