Electrothermal Chemical Technology involves use of electrically induces plasma to trigger the propellants in guns and other bore weapons, so as to reduce the effect of temperature on the propellant. This enables the weapon to achieve higher nozzle velocity and increased control of the trigger mechanism compared to regular chemical trigger systems. As these systems use electric plasma guns to ignite and control the propellant it gives higher precision to the systems. These systems were first proposed in 1980. US army is currently researching in this field to create an advance electric trigger systems for tanks and other long range bore systems.

These systems have huge potential in future weapon systems that require increased accuracy and power. South Korea and the United Kingdom are also expected to be working on their own electro thermal chemical systems. The technology is still under development and could be expected to be available by 2025.
